Software Best Practices

What is the definition of “Best Practices”? It is a concept in the administration of a business theorizing that certain processes or procedures are more efficient at producing desired results than others. Simply put it is a way to build in standards to streamline a company’s routine procedures. Within an organization, best practices are a great idea. They often improve efficiency by allowing employees to avoid unneccessary tasks. But how does software tackle the idea of Best Practices?

In certain software applications Best Practices are helpful. Accounting, for example, is usually very similar from one organization to the next, so building in Best Practices into the functionality of an accounting system may restructure a company’s accounting processes resulting in a more efficient way to accomplish the same goals. But changing the structure of a business’s accounting procedures is very different than attempting to change that business’s core procedures. Many companies exist because of the fact that they have found a more effective way to produce goods or services then their competitors.

When successful companies need software, they should not adopt a software system that forces them to change what has made them a success! Software that is flexible allows a business to keep the practices that are effective while changing the practices that require optimization. Even struggling companies generally have procedures that are innovative and different from others in their industry. With a canned system that forces a business to use generic “Best Practices”, those unique, effective practices are replaced with industry standards which eliminate their edge over the competition. The solution is a software that offers Best Practices when optimization is needed but is agile enough to mold itself to the processes that have already been streamlined internally.
